The “Call Me MISTER” program is an effort to address the critical shortage of African American male teachers particularly among South Carolina ’s lowest performing public schools. Program participants are selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities.
The “Call Me MISTER” program is a collaboration between Clemson University , private, historically black colleges ( Benedict College , Claflin University , and Morris College ) and two-year technical colleges to recruit, train, certify and secure employment for minority males as elementary teachers in the public schools of South Carolina .
The project provides:
a.. Tuition for admitted students pursuing approved programs of study at participating colleges.
b.. An academic support system to help assure their success.
c.. A cohort system for social and cultural support.

Procedures for admission to the “Call Me MISTER ” program are as follows:
1. Apply for and be accepted into one of the participating colleges or universities at which the degree and teaching certificate will be earned
2. Complete the Call Me MISTER online application
3. Submit the following items:
Two letters of recommendation:
1. one (1) from a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal at the high school from which the diploma is earned
2. one (1) from a person of the student’s choice who can express the student’s involvement in the community and/or potential for entering the teaching profession.
An essay entitled, “Why I Want To Teach,” which will address the student’s motivation for entering the teaching profession and the contributions he hopes to make to the profession and to the community as a teacher
Following the submission of the items above, an interview will be scheduled with prospective program participants to ascertain their potential for teaching and their motivations for participation in the program, as well as to provide an opportunity for clarification of any information submitted through the application process.

This new program encourages young minority women to pursue an education and later a career in the geosciences. It provides financial aid and matches the student with a mentor in the same field who will offer guidance and support. This exchange will enhance the student’s experience and provide a view of the world ahead.
Applicants must be:
* A woman who is African-American, Hispanic, or Native American
* A full-time student who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in the geosciences (geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, meteorology, physical oceanography, planetary geology, or earth science education) at an accredited college or university
* A contributor to the larger world community through her academic and personal strengths

Any U.S. journalist with at least three years of professional journalistic experience is eligible to apply for the fellowship program. The program is open to journalists from newspapers, magazines, wire services, radio, television and on-line news organizations. Freelancers are also invited to apply.
There is no minimal educational requirement for applicants, nor is there any minimum or maximum age for Fellows. Fellows are not required to have foreign-language skills or prior overseas experience, though both may be helpful. The most important criteria are an applicant’s sincere interest in international issues, a curiosity about global events and a demonstrated record of journalistic ability.
Applicants must be citizens of the United States or else be working as journalists in the United States as full-time employees of U.S.-based news organizations.

A Special Opportunity: Third, Fourth, and Fifth Graders - Free Summer Program

Dear Parents/Guardians:
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will be offering its first Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Camp, a three week day camp for elementary school students currently in grades 3-5. This is an all day commuter program.
NSBE has designed the SEEK Camp to be a fun and engaging educational experience for all students. The overall goal of the camp is to show students what engineering is about and give them additional skills and confidence in math and science. The inaugural camp will take place at the Woodridge Campus of FPCS (2959 Carlton Street, NE) July 9-27, 2007. This
enrichment program is available for all students who are not required to attend summer school.
Through this program each student will:
Increase their knowledge in math, science, and technology through engagement in interactive, team based activities designed around math and science educations standards
Have greater knowledge of and interest in science, technology, engineering and math
Know how to learn
Have a NSBE member as a mentor for the camp duration
Have greater knowledge of past and present engineering giants
Develop greater communication skills (written and oral) as well as presentation skills
Have a positive self image
Have a positive image of an engineer
Develop problem solving skills, thus providing a leg up on their academic pursuits for the upcoming school year and beyond
